KZN matric muthi overachiever breaks her silence

Nomfundo Mthembu, a matric pupil from Nkosi Ntulakabayise High School, has defied the odds and emerged triumphant over life’s adversities.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including sacrificing the comfort of her home to live in a rented backroom closer to school, Nomfundo has proven that true grit and determination can lead to success.

One of the hardships Nomfundo had to endure was hurtful allegations from her peers that she was using muthi, a traditional African medicine, to achieve good grades.

However, through her tireless efforts, she secured herself a spot among the country’s top achievers in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, ranking second in KwaZulu-Natal.

Reflecting on her achievement, Nomfundo expressed her disbelief but also her confidence in knowing that she deserved her success.

She attributed her accomplishments to hard work and taking responsibility for her own life.

Despite the mockery she faced from her fellow students, Nomfundo remained focused on her future and ignored the negativity.

She also recalled how she was subjected to fellow school pupils’ mockery that she excelled in her schoolwork because she was “using muthi”.

“All their comments broke my heart because I spent sleepless nights studying. This while my peers thought I got good grades because teachers liked me or that I was using muthi.”

Nomfundo credits her unwavering support system, consisting of her mother and uncle, for giving her the strength to persevere.
