Komphela reacts to shocking Sundowns defeat
Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela called their unexpected 1-0 loss to Polokwane City on Sunday a “bad day in the office.”
After a strong 5-0 win against Golden Arrows in the Carling Knockout Cup, the defending champions were brought back to reality when Bulelani Nikani scored in the 82nd minute, marking their first Betway Premiership loss of the season.
Komphela acknowledged that the defeat hurt and noted that Sundowns had opportunities to score in the first half, particularly using their wings.
However, he stressed the importance of not dwelling on this game, as they have a chance to bounce back against Cape Town City midweek.
“It’s not a pleasant day for us, a bad day in the office,” Komphela told Sundowns TV.
“In the first half, it was a bit open for us to take advantage. We could have used Thapelo [Morena] more on the right. In the second half, it got too scrappy, and the speed of our passing was affected by the dry surface.
“But there are no excuses in football. Losing is a huge setback, and we need to move forward and focus on the match on Wednesday.
“There’s still another game to play. We need to prepare and redeem ourselves.”
