Kaizer Chiefs target Bongani Zungu
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly set to make a move for free agent Bongani Zungu in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Soweto club is keen to strengthen their midfield, and the 32-year-old former Mamelodi Sundowns player fits the bill, particularly with Edson Castillo’s long-term injury concerns.
However, for the deal to go through, Chiefs will need to make space in their squad by either selling or loaning out some players. Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Samkelo Zwane are said to be among those who could make way for Zungu.
Zungu has been a free agent since leaving Sundowns at the end of last season.
His departure from the champions was believed to have played a role in the strained relationship between former Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena and the club’s director of football.
Mokwena, now managing Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca, attempted to bring Zungu to his new club during the off-season, but the move collapsed due to disagreements over wages.
Before his time at Sundowns, Zungu had stints in Portugal and France, and he made headlines in the UK after breaching lockdown rules while on loan at Rangers during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In September, former player Junior Khanye encouraged Kaizer Chiefs’ rivals, Orlando Pirates, to pursue Zungu’s signature.
Speaking to iDiskiTimes, Khanye stated: “Forget age, I mean if a player is good, he is good, quality is quality and that’s how they mature. So, Pirates need Bongani Zungu. Credit to his past coaches like Rulani [Mokwena] and Pitso [Mosimane] because they worked on him post his days at Tuks. I mean his crosses are like those of players who play in the number 10 position. He plays forward passes more than backward and sideways. They need Bongani Zungu.”
