Kaizer Chiefs suffer 2nd straight defeat in Premiership
Kaizer Chiefs faced their second consecutive loss in the Betway Premiership, losing 1-0 to SuperSport United at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.
The Chiefs had been performing well since their only league defeat almost a month ago, including a big cup win over SuperSport last week.
However, this time the team, coached by Nasreddine Nabi, couldn’t score and was punished by SuperSport.
With this victory, SuperSport moved up five places to third with 10 points, while Chiefs stayed ninth with six points.
Chiefs suffered a setback early in the match when Edson Castillo was injured and had to be stretchered off, replaced by Yusuf Maart.
In the 43rd minute, Tashreeq Morris shocked Kaizer Chiefs by scoring from a well-placed cross, leaving the Chiefs defence behind before firing the ball into the net.
Just after the hour mark, Mduduzi Shabalala nearly equalised for Chiefs with a powerful shot that missed the right post.
Morris almost added a second goal for SuperSport when he took a long-range shot, but it went just over the crossbar, as Chiefs goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari was off his line.
Before this match, Chiefs had been in great form, winning 4-0 against SuperSport in their Carling Knockout clash last week. They also claimed the Cultural Urban Festival Africa (Cufa) Cup by beating Marumo Gallants 4-3 on penalties on October 14.
However, they had lost their previous league game against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, which was their first league defeat of the season on September 28.
Earlier, Richards Bay drew 0-0 with Stellenbosch at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium. Marumo Gallants and TS Galaxy played to a 1-1 draw at Dr Molemela Stadium, while Royal AM won 2-0 against Sekhukhune United at Harry Gwala Stadium.
