Jacob Zuma in hot water again

Gender rights groups have issued a stern warning to politicians against exploiting the rights of minority groups for their own political gain.

This comes in response to comments made by former president Jacob Zuma regarding same-sex marriages at a rally of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party in Pietermaritzburg earlier this month.

According to a report by the Sunday Times, Zuma stated at the MK Party gathering that he had been approached by a traditional leader who expressed concerns about same-sex laws.

He went on to say, “When we say things are not right, we are not lying. In South African laws, there is a democracy. Those people who enact the laws are in Parliament, and they are not the majority. The majority is at home.”

These remarks have sparked outrage among gender rights groups who argue that politicians should not exploit the rights of minority groups for their own political gain.

They emphasize that the rights of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, should be protected and respected.

It is concerning that a former president would make such remarks, as it undermines the progress that has been made in promoting equality and inclusivity in South Africa.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in the country since 2006, and it is important that politicians uphold and defend these rights rather than using them as a political tool.
