Gang leader and son killed, community living in fear

Residents of Lavender Hill in the Western Cape say that following the death of the Fast Guns gang leader, they are now living in fear. The alleged gang leader and his son were shot dead in broad daylight. Another man was shot as well, and he is receiving medical attention in a hospital.

The community is concerned about Jordan Brown’s retaliation. Jordan Brown, 11, a talented football player, spent weekends with his father, Cheslyn Nel, even though he didn’t live with him.

Brown’s grandmother Shameema Ebrahim said, “he is an innocent grandchild. He plays soccer, and he comes to his daddy and takes him home again. He is an innocent child. I want my grandchild back. I can’t stand it.”

Jordan, his father, and a fellow gang member were seated in the back of a house on a Friday afternoon.

Another gang member allegedly entered the home and proceeded right to the back where they were, according to family members.

A family member who was present claims that they were unaware of the triggerman’s identity until after the shooting.

She claims that Jordan and his father were executed-style shot multiple times.

The second man is still being treated in the hospital.

Members of the 7945 Action Group, the postal code for the area, say they will shut down Lavender Hill and surrounding areas if the perpetrator, whom, they say is known to the police, is not speedily arrested.

According to the group, the suspect was just recently let out of Pollsmoor Prison.

While acknowledging that communities must contribute to the fight against gangsterism and drugs, they claim the police aren’t doing enough.

For those who do provide testimony, according to the group’s Nadia Satarien, by the time I leave the police station after presenting a case against a gang leader, they have already heard about it. Nobody wants to go and present a case because fear is so pervasive in our community. Imagine not only losing a child but also being reluctant to bring a claim against it. That is sick because it has reached a stage where mourning is no longer relevant.

The Metro Police Gang and Task Team have reportedly been sent to the area, according to the City of Cape Town.
