Free State College student hands himself over for the murder of 21-year-old girlfriend

A man handed himself over to the police after admitting to killing his girlfriend in Gawula village near Giyani, on January 11, 2024.

The police then opened a murder case upon discovering the lifeless body of the 21-year-old woman in nearby bushes.

The suspect, who is also the deceased’s boyfriend, went to the Community Services Center at the police station and confessed to the crime.

He provided the contact information of a witness and offered to lead the police to the crime scene.

The K-9 Unit was quickly summoned, and they, along with the witness, located the deceased’s body.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and the deceased were in a relationship, with the suspect studying in a Free State college and the deceased enrolled at Tshwane University Of Technology (TUT).

The victim has been named as Nyikiwe Maranda Chauke (21), who lived in Gawula village, while the suspect, a 24-year-old is also a resident of the same village.

The motive behind the killing is unknown, but domestic violence is being considered.

The Giyani Police Spokesman, Sergeant Ridgewell Rikhotso, stated that the suspect is scheduled to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 15, 2024.
