Firearm of Zimbabwean man who killed his South African girlfriend has been recovered

Lephalale police have made significant progress in the investigation of a murder case involving a 55-year-old man, who allegedly shot and killed his 44-year-old girlfriend, Lantinana Molwantoa, on 02 May 2024 at Mahlakung Informal Settlement.

Firearm and ammunition found in bushes

In a major development, police have recovered a firearm and ammunition believed to be linked to the crime.

The Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, along with the Tracking team, discovered the weapon buried in the bushes a few kilometers from the settlement during an extensive investigation.

Initial findings indicate that the firearm was reported stolen in Lephalale in November 2022.

The victim was found lying on the street in the early hours after being shot by an unknown suspect.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the investigators for their thorough work.

The suspect, a Zimbabwean national named Samson Mphofu, has been in police custody since his arrest. He is scheduled to return to court on Monday, 10 June, for another bail application.

Additionally, Mphofu faces charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and will appear before the Lephalale court on Tuesday, 04 June.
