Fernandez advises Khune on his Future – ‘It Is a Tricky One’
Itumeleng Khune, the legendary goalkeeper for Kaizer Chiefs, is currently a free agent after his contract ended.
At 37 years old, he has played for the club for 25 years but has not yet decided what to do next.
Khune started the 2023-24 season as third-choice goalkeeper but moved up to first-choice due to errors by Brandon Petersen.
However, he was later suspended, allowing Bruce Bvuma to take his place. When Khune’s contract expired, the club chose not to renew it but mentioned another role for him.
Rowen Fernandez, a former Amakhosi goalkeeper, has advised Khune to carefully consider his options.
“It is a tricky one you know, he has been at the club for what, like 20-odd years now, or whatever,” he said. Fernandez emphasized that Khune needs to decide whether he wants to keep playing or become a club ambassador, and he should think about what is best for his future.
The club has signed Rwanda international Fiacre Ntwari to take Khune’s place, and he has been starting as goalkeeper.
Despite this change, the Chiefs have not managed to keep a clean sheet in their first five league matches, leaving Bvuma and Petersen opportunities to prove themselves.
