Edwin Sodi’s estranged wife caught up in R50 million tax war

Edwin Sodi’s estranged wife, Nthateng Matsoleli Lerata, has found herself in hot water with the South African Revenue Services (Sars) after being hit with a staggering tax bill amounting to almost R50 million.

The exclusive revelation by Sunday World unveils the financial predicament faced by Lerata, who separated from Sodi a few years ago and is currently on the path to divorce.

According to court documents obtained by Sunday World, Lerata is indebted to Sars for over R49.9 million in personal income tax.

This substantial amount comprises over R11.7 million in personal income tax, an additional R18.6 million in tax, and more than R18.9 million in accrued interest, leading to the significant total owed. Administrative penalties of over R2,000 have also been imposed on her by Sars.

Prior to seeking judgment, Sars issued a final demand letter to Lerata on November 29, 2022, urging her to settle the full amount within 10 business days to avoid potential asset attachment or liquidation.

The letter outlined the overdue amount and provided options for Lerata to dispute the debt or negotiate a compromise with the revenue service.

Despite Lerata’s claims of being Sodi’s equal business partner in ventures such as Blackhead Consulting, Blackhead Investment, Phirie Construction, Base Properties, and G5 Group, Sars has made it clear that failure to comply with the payment terms or explore alternative solutions may result in the appointment of a third party to settle the outstanding tax debt on her behalf.

The unfolding financial saga highlights the complexities and challenges faced by Lerata in navigating her tax obligations amid her separation from Sodi and underscores the stringent measures enforced by Sars to recover outstanding tax liabilities.
