This emerged in the Durban magistrate’s court on Tuesday when Sizwe Ngema appeared briefly. He was scheduled to apply for bail. Prosecutor Calvin Govender asked for an adjournment after receiving a medical certificate from district surgeon Dr Jabulani Mthethwa.

According to the state’s allegations, Ngema is charged with the murder of Yolanda Bianca Khuzwayo, also a metro police officer, in their shared flat on Joseph Nduli Street on March 31.

It’s asserted that Ngema captured and circulated videos on social media showing Khuzwayo’s dying moments before fleeing the scene with her cellphone. He faces charges of premeditated murder and theft.

In his assessment, Dr. Mthethwa affirmed that Ngema underwent an examination to ascertain his comprehension of the legal proceedings and the moral wrongness of his actions.

Notably, Ngema is not under chronic medication, but Dr. Mthethwa recommended further medical observation.

“He says he does not remember anything about the incident which brought about his arrest,” he said.

The matter was adjourned to June 7.
