Driver arrested after high-speed chase and R80,000 worth of abalone seized

A high-speed chase in Gqeberha ended with the driver’s tyre bursting and his arrest for possessing abalone worth around R80,000.

The SAPS flying squad arrested the driver on Sunday evening after receiving a tip-off about a “white Hyundai transporting abalone.”

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg explained that officers spotted the vehicle during a patrol.

Two bags of abalone were found in the crashed vehicle.

When the driver noticed the police car, he sped off, leading to a high-speed pursuit.

“The driver was driving recklessly, and at the intersection of Harrower and Brock roads, a tyre burst.

The driver lost control, jumped out of the car, and tried to flee, but he was arrested,” said Janse van Rensburg.

Upon searching the vehicle, police found two bags containing 516 units of abalone, valued at approximately R80,000.

The vehicle was also found to have been stolen in September in the Mount Road area.

The suspect has been charged with attempted murder, reckless driving, possession of abalone, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
