Crusaders slump to their worst ever Super Rugby record as they suffer fourth consecutive defeat
The nail-biting match not only marked the Super Rugby champions’ first win of the season but also dealt a significant blow to the seven-time defending champion Crusaders, who now find themselves winless after four consecutive defeats – a historic low for the powerhouse team.
The Crusaders, under the leadership of new coach Rob Penney, faced mounting pressure as they struggled to contain the Hurricanes’ relentless offensive onslaught.
Despite taking the lead in the 71st minute with a penalty kick by flyhalf Riley Hohepa, the Crusaders faltered when reserve lock Jamie Hannah was sin-binned, reducing them to 14 men.
Seizing the opportunity, the Hurricanes capitalized on their numerical advantage, culminating in Sangster’s decisive try that sealed their victory.
Brett Cameron’s successful conversion further solidified their triumph.
Crusaders captain David Havili, undeterred by his team’s string of injuries, acknowledged the challenges they faced but emphasized the need to persevere and maintain unity.
Despite missing key players like Scott Barrett, who suffered a fractured finger in a previous match, the Crusaders remained resilient, with a young and determined squad giving their all on the field.
