He is now in hospital under police guard.

Reports say the officer allegedly shot both victims on Tuesday evening and fled the scene, prompting a major police search.

The Vhembe SAPS District Task team tracked him to the Makuya area.

The police spotted him driving fast along Tshitavha road near Sambandou bridge.

“When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect started firing multiple shots at them, prompting the police to respond swiftly,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.

The officer was wounded, and both the suspect and the injured officer were taken to hospital.

A service pistol and ammunition were found at the scene.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the quick action of the officers involved.

“We wish the injured member a speedy recovery and assure the public that the suspect will face the full consequences of his actions,” he said.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is now handling the case, as is standard when police officers are involved.

The suspect faces two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder for the shoot-out. He is expected to appear in court once he has recovered.

“This case will be monitored closely to ensure justice is served,” Hadebe added.
