Another Afcon giant collapses

Ivory Coast suffered a major setback in their quest for success in the Africa Cup of Nations, as they were convincingly beaten 4-0 by Equatorial Guinea in their final Group A game in Abidjan.

Equatorial Guinea’s Emilio Nsue was the star of the show, scoring two goals and securing his team’s top spot in the group, narrowly edging out Nigeria on goal difference.

This defeat leaves Ivory Coast in a precarious position, as they now face the possibility of elimination from the tournament.

In the last nine editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast has only failed to progress beyond the group stage once, in 2017.

Under the leadership of coach Jean-Louis Gasset, the two-time champions will now have to anxiously await the results of other matches to determine if they can advance as one of the four best third-placed teams.

This defeat against Equatorial Guinea is particularly disheartening as it is Ivory Coast’s heaviest-ever home defeat.

Despite a promising start to the game, Ivory Coast struggled to create scoring opportunities and ultimately experienced a late collapse.
