Andre de Jong sends Stellenbosch FC past AmaZulu in Carling Knockout Cup

Andre de Jong scored a key extra-time goal as Stellenbosch FC beat AmaZulu 2-1 at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban, moving on to the next round of the Carling Knockout Cup.

De Jong created the first goal and scored the second, while captain Sage Stephens played very well as the reigning cup champions secured this important win.

The match began slowly, but Stellenbosch started to take control as they searched for the opening goal. In the 25th minute, Devin Titus scored to put them ahead 1-0.

The 23-year-old Titus, who may get called up to the national team, scored after a nice pass from De Jong.

Chances were limited in the first half, but coach Steve Barker was pleased as his team looked more dangerous.

Stellenbosch kept possession well, and whenever they lost the ball, they quickly got it back, with De Jong often involved in their attacks.

AmaZulu came out strong in the second half and equalised when Tshepang Moremi scored after a great pass from Wayde Jooste.

This was AmaZulu’s first shot on target, and Stephens was clearly frustrated with his defence.

This goal seemed to motivate AmaZulu, who began to dominate the game, hoping to end Stellenbosch’s cup run.

However, neither team could score in regular time, so the match went to extra time.

Not long into extra time, Stellenbosch regained the lead through De Jong, who headed in a cross from Sanele Barns.

De Jong nearly made it 3-1, but the assistant referee ruled him offside.

Video replays suggested he was actually onside.

In the end, there was no heartbreak for Stellenbosch as they held on to their 2-1 lead until the final whistle.
