ANC leader steps aside as murder allegations surface

A promising young leader in the African National Congress has made a difficult decision to voluntarily step aside from his leadership position after being charged with the murder of a police officer.

Athenkosi Richard Daniso, a 31-year-old member of the ANC Sarah Baartman regional executive committee, is facing accusations of killing Warrant Officer Luthando Mayekiso, a respected 51-year-old cop in Port Alfred.

The tragic incident unfolded outside Mayekiso’s home in Nelson Mandela Township on 4 February following a scuffle between the two men.

It is reported that Daniso had transported a group of people, including Mayekiso, in a minibus taxi from a party back to their homes on the instructions of his taxi boss brother.

The group had been enjoying festivities at Mayekiso’s homestead in the picturesque holiday town of Port Alfred, where Daniso’s older brother was friends with the police officer.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, an argument erupted between Daniso and Mayekiso when the minibus taxi stopped in front of the officer’s house.

The dispute escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in Mayekiso falling and hitting his head on the ground.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, the police officer tragically succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
