Alleged police brutality at its worst as man fights for dear life in ICU
An alleged incident of police brutality in Parkdene has raised concerns and sparked an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) following a disturbing encounter between a man, Eben Snoek, and a police officer.
The incident has left Snoek, 34, in a critical condition, fighting for his life in the ICU at Groote Schuur Hospital.
According to Snoek’s cousin, Dalene Rossouw, the troubling incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon when police officers patrolling the area stopped Snoek as he was walking home.
Allegedly in possession of half a Mandrax tablet, Snoek attempted to discard it upon being stopped by the officers.
Rossouw recounted the events, stating, “Eyewitnesses told me the officer stopped him and started assaulting him. A struggle ensued and Eben was tackled to the ground where he hit his head on the pavement.”
Rossouw’s concern grew when Snoek failed to return home the following day, prompting her to visit the local police station in search of him.
However, she was met with confusion and lack of information from the officers regarding Snoek’s whereabouts.
It wasn’t until Thursday morning that Rossouw was informed that Snoek had been found at Groote Schuur Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU with severe head injuries.
Expressing her frustration and disbelief at the lack of communication from the authorities, Rossouw questioned why she was not informed of Snoek’s hospitalization sooner and why she was made to file a missing person’s report.
The provincial police spokesperson, Lt Col Malcolm Pojie, confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated by Conville Police into the allegations of police misconduct and Snoek’s injuries.
In response to the incident, Pojie stated, “Conville police officers were busy with crime prevention and combating operations when they accosted Snoek with Mandrax in his possession.”
The case has garnered attention and raised concerns about police conduct and the need for thorough investigations into allegations of brutality within law enforcement agencies.
