ANC popular political figure gunned down
Mr. Muzi Manyathi, a well-known political figure, and ANC Gert Sibande regional deputy chairperson was tragically shot and died at a fuel station in Mkondo (Piet Retief). This incident happened on Friday, 4 November 2022 at about 18:30 in the evening.
According to the report, a Mercedes-Benz occupied by two people with registration number plate, XTN559GP, was seen moving from one fuel pump to another without refilling meanwhile the ANC prominent figure, Manyathi, reportedly bought something from the kiosk. It is said that one male occupant came out of the said vehicle, armed with a firearm, and allegedly shot the victim multiple times at close range. The suspects then fled the scene using the said vehicle.
The incident was reported to the Piet Retief police and the paramedics, but Manyathi was tragically pronounced dead at the site. There is a murder case under investigation. The Mercedes-Benz was later discovered abandoned next to a dam.
According to a preliminary investigation, the vehicle’s number plates do not appear to be genuine. It was also learned that the Mercedes-Benz was reported stolen in April of this year (2022) at Brakpan in the Gauteng Province.
Since then, a team of professionals in the field of inquiry has been put together by Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, to investigate the case.
Police are working tirelessly around the clock, but no one has been arrested so far. The police are asking anyone with information that could help catch the offenders to phone the Crime Stop line right away at 08600 10111 or provide information through the My SAPS App. Callers have the option to remain anonymous, and all information received will be handled as confidential.
Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, has severely denounced the deadly shooting of the PR Councilor and stated that police will not stop until those responsible are brought to justice so that the victim’s family may receive justice. The General predicted that the team will quickly achieve a breakthrough.
