Somizi Mhlongo’s Ndebele outfit sparks debate
South African media personality Somizi Mhlongo faced backlash on social media for allegedly culturally appropriating Ndebele traditional attire.
The “Masked Singer” judge shared a photo of himself with renowned artist Esther Mahlangu, wearing a Ndebele blanket and accessories.
He captioned the post, “2024 can end. I’m good. Thank you, South Africa, for hearing my wishes. NGIPHELELE [I am full].”
While some fans celebrated his meeting with Mahlangu, with one saying, “What an incredible time to be alive and witness this precious, significant moment,” others criticised him for wearing a traditional blanket meant only for married women.
Kgotso Mahlangu, a Ndebele activist, stated, “This is utter nonsense! This specific design of the Ndebele blanket and Idzila [neck ring] is specially made for married women only!”
Some defended Mhlongo, suggesting he may not have known about the cultural significance and that the Ndebele people he visited should have informed him. “The person who gave him those is to be blamed, assuming that Somizi does not know the Ndebele culture.”
Another fan added, “Congratulations, Somsom! Dreams truly coming alive—I can feel the energy and excitement radiating from you. I’m absolutely speechless and beyond proud of you, my sweetheart.”
