Police arrest sister and daughter of Limpopo cop linked to six murders and R10 million insurance fraud
Two women related to police Sergeant Rachel Shokane Kutumela, who is accused of killing at least six people for insurance payouts, have been arrested.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a national police spokesperson, confirmed that a 47-year-old nurse, Kutumela’s sister, and a 27-year-old woman, her daughter, were arrested by the SAPS Limpopo tracking team in Mabokelele village.
This followed the issuance of a J50 warrant of arrest by the investigating officer.
The two women will appear in the Polokwane Magistrate Court alongside Kutumela, facing multiple charges including murder, fraud, and money laundering.
Kutumela was arrested on October 11, 2024, at her workplace in Senwabarwana police station.
Mathe stated that Kutumela’s victims were known to her and came from disadvantaged backgrounds, with some being disabled or mentally challenged.
NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi Dzhangi said Kutumela allegedly took out life and funeral insurance policies on various victims, claiming R10 million as the sole beneficiary from multiple service providers, including ABSA, Standard Bank, Capitec, Hollard, Assupol, Old Mutual, Onelife, and Clientele.
Her alleged “killing spree” reportedly began in 2019.
In one incident, a woman was found burnt in her shack, and in another, a disabled man was discovered drowned in a dam.
Kutumela is expected to apply for bail at her next court appearance.
