Man arrested for the rape and murder of his girlfriend’s 8-year-old daughter

On Tuesday, September 3, 2024, 27-year-old Mothobi Moagi appeared before the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court, facing charges of rape and murder related to the death of his girlfriend’s eight-year-old daughter. The incident occurred after the mother left her two daughters, aged four and eight, in Moagi’s care on the night of August 31, 2024, at her home in Ikageng village, Boitekong, near Rustenburg.

When the mother returned in the early hours of September 1, 2024, she found the house locked and a window broken. She entered through the window and discovered her eight-year-old daughter’s lifeless body on the sofa.

The child is suspected to have been strangled after being raped. The mother alerted the neighbours, and the police were called to the scene. Moagi, who was not present at the house when the mother returned, was apprehended for questioning and subsequently charged with rape and murder. His first court appearance was on September 3, 2024, with the case adjourned to September 10, 2024, for a formal bail application.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Police Commissioner, condemned the crime as preventable and expressed his dismay that the child was allegedly harmed by someone entrusted with her safety. He has directed the Boitekong Detectives to ensure that justice is served.
