Prominent politician’s daughter beaten to a pulp by lover in broad daylight
A shocking incident of gender-based violence in Swartruggens, North West Province, has left a woman hospitalised with severe injuries after being brutally assaulted by her alleged lover in broad daylight. The attack, which was captured on video and circulated widely on social media, has drawn public outrage.
The assault took place on Monday, 19 August 2024, in a township in Swartruggens. The victim, reportedly the daughter of a prominent North West politician, was seen in the video helplessly pleading with her attacker to stop. Despite her desperate pleas, the man continued to beat her mercilessly, even using a brick at one point. Her body was half-naked, and her face was covered in blood by the end of the video. Concerned community members, who witnessed the attack, were heard urging others to intervene, with some suggesting they pelt the attacker with stones to prevent him from killing the woman.
The situation escalated when the attacker, identified as 38-year-old Vuyo Amos Papa, allegedly took out a knife and began dragging the woman towards a nearby field. Fearing for her life, local residents alerted her mother, who quickly contacted the police. The police responded swiftly, rescuing the woman just in time and apprehending the suspect despite his resistance.
It was later revealed that Papa also assaulted the victim’s seven-year-old daughter during the attack. He has since appeared before the Swartruggens Magistrates’ Court on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and resisting arrest. He was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on Friday, 23 August 2024, for legal aid.
Investigations have uncovered that the suspect has a history of violence, with previous convictions for assault and possession of dangerous weapons dating back to 2004. Despite these convictions, he had previously been allowed to pay admission of guilt fines.
The incident has been strongly condemned by Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, especially as it occurred during Women’s Month, a time dedicated to honoring and protecting women. He praised the police for their prompt action, which likely prevented further harm, and emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to protect women and children from domestic violence.
