Musa Khawula is not dead, he is in prison
Controversial blogger Musa Khawula is alive, despite rumours circulating on social media on Tuesday claiming otherwise. Reports indicate that Khawula appeared in court wearing orange prison attire.
His court appearance was brief, as the session was postponed to give him time to secure a new lawyer after his previous attorney abandoned the case.
According to Sunday World, Khawula, notorious for his harsh criticisms of celebrities, is currently serving a 60-day sentence for contempt of court due to his failure to appear in a Gauteng court. His arrest took place at the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court on July 9, where he was facing a murder charge.
In addition to his current legal troubles, Khawula is embroiled in a defamation case involving Nozuko Mbalula, wife of ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, and her business partner, Michelle Perrow. In May, Khawula made serious allegations against the pair on the social media platform X, accusing them of paying bribes to secure government tenders worth R150 million between 2013 and 2019.
Following these accusations, Mbalula and Perrow obtained a court interdict against Khawula. Court documents shared by Fikile Mbalula on X reveal that Khawula has been ordered to pay damages to the applicants, cover their legal costs, and remove the defamatory statements from his social media feed within 48 hours of the order.
Khawula has been ordered to pay R1 million in damages to Mbalula and Perrow. However, he responded on his X account, stating that he did not have that amount of money.
The National Prosecuting Authority in the Western Cape confirmed that Khawula appeared in the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, but the case was postponed until September 2 for the finalization of judicare.
Khawula is also facing a pending murder case involving Wandile Khambule. According to a report by Sunday World in August 2022, Khambule’s girlfriend, Sweetness Jaftha, claimed that Khawula showed up at her residence in Vredenburg on March 4, 2022, around 5 p.m., demanding to see Khambule
