European giants stalk Sundowns star
Mamelodi Sundowns could face the loss of one of their key players as European giant Olympiacos show interest in signing Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa.
The 25-year-old left-footed winger has made a significant impact since joining the Brazilians from Belgian second tier side SK Beveren.
Ribeiro’s debut season in South Africa has been a resounding success, with 16 goals across all competitions.
He has formed a formidable partnership with fellow prolific striker Peter Shalulile, playing a crucial role in Sundowns’ dominance in the league.
According to The Citizen, Olympiacos, well known for their scouting network in Africa, have been tracking Ribeiro’s progress.
The Greek giants previously monitored Keagan Dolly while he was with Sundowns, showcasing their interest in South African talent.
While Olympiacos’ interest is a testament to Ribeiro’s ability, it remains unclear if Sundowns would be willing to part ways with a player who is expected to challenge for individual honors at the end of the season.
The winger is currently recovering from a hamstring injury, and his availability for next month’s Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates is uncertain.
The potential departure of Ribeiro would be a significant blow for Sundowns, who will be hoping to retain their star player as they continue to compete for domestic and continental titles.
However, the lure of playing for a European giant and the potential to test himself at a higher level could prove too tempting for the Brazilian forward.
