Suspicious looking Samson Moyo attracts police while buying fuel with a container and unknowingly leads them to crime scene
A suspected car thief’s plans were foiled in a rather ironic twist when the stolen vehicle he was driving ran out of petrol.
26-year-old Zimbabwean national, Samson Moyo, and an accomplice currently at large, allegedly hot-wired a Honda Fit from a Goshwe village yard on Thursday night.
Their joyride was short-lived, however, as the car sputtered to a stop shortly after, leaving the thieves stranded with an empty fuel tank.
Unwilling to abandon their prize, the duo reportedly stashed the car in the bush and headed to nearby Tutume the next morning to purchase petrol.
While filling their jerry cans, the pair attracted the attention of the police, who were already on the lookout for a stolen vehicle in the area.
One suspect managed to escape, but Moyo was apprehended and subsequently appeared before Francistown Magistrates’ Court on Monday. He was charged with stealing a motor vehicle and entering the country illegally.
Despite pleading his innocence, Moyo was deemed a flight risk and remanded in custody. He is scheduled to return to court on June 4th, hopefully with a police escort vehicle that has a full tank of petrol this time
