If boots could talk, Mabasa’s studs would sing
Tshegofatso Mabasa’s return to Orlando Pirates has been nothing short of spectacular.
The 27-year-old striker, recalled from his loan spell at Moroka Swallows, has become a familiar sight celebrating goals in front of the ecstatic Buccaneers faithful.
His latest exploits, a brace against Cape Town City, propelled Pirates closer to their coveted CAF Champions League spot and further solidified Mabasa’s claim as a key figure in the team’s attack.
Prior to Mabasa’s return, Evidence Makgopa was the preferred choice upfront for both Pirates and Bafana Bafana.
The 23-year-old impressed with his performances, even leading the line for Hugo Broos’ side as they secured a bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations. However, an injury sidelined Makgopa in March, opening the door for Mabasa to shine.
Since then, Mabasa has been in scintillating form, netting an impressive ten goals in just 12 appearances across all competitions.
His exploits include a memorable first-ever top-flight hat-trick in a 7-1 demolition of Golden Arrows.
With 13 league goals to his name, Mabasa is now tied with fellow Bafana Bafana forward Iqraam Rayners in the race for the Golden Boot.
This resurgence begs the question: will Mabasa get the nod from Hugo Broos for next month’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe?
Despite a past incident where Broos substituted Mabasa early in a 2022 World Cup qualifier, the striker’s current form and goal-scoring prowess are hard to ignore.
With Makgopa still recovering from injury, Mabasa has a golden opportunity to cement his place in the national team setup.
His ability to find the back of the net consistently, coupled with his experience and understanding of Broos’ system, could prove invaluable as Bafana Bafana embark on their journey to qualify for the World Cup.
