21-year-old Zimbabwean woman arrested in Botswana after she dumped her baby in a pit toilet. Faces 7 years in prison
A 21-year-old Zimbabwean woman has been arrested in Botswana after she dumped a baby in a pit toilet.
Shelly Sibanda is facing charges of abortion and concealing the birth of a child.
The court heard that Sibanda terminated her pregnancy and disposed of the foetus in a pit latrine.
Her actions came to light when a colleague reported the incident to the police.
The police conducted a search at the farm, and the remains of the foetus were discovered in the pit latrine.
Abortion is illegal in Botswana except in cases where the mother’s life is in danger or in cases of rape or incest.
The penalty for abortion in Botswana is up to seven years in prison, and concealing the birth of a child carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment.
Sibanda has been denied bail, and the case has been postponed to allow for further investigations.
The magistrate expressed concern over the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a thorough investigation to be conducted.
