Azola Matrose’s Determination: Aiming Higher at Orlando Pirates
Orlando Pirates young talent, Azola Matrose, is setting ambitious goals for himself as he dons the black and white jersey.
The 20-year-old left-footed attacker, who arrived from Chippa United at the start of the 2022/23 season, is confident that he can elevate his game even higher than he did at his former club.
Matrose’s journey with the Buccaneers has been marked by challenges and opportunities, with the youngster expressing his determination to make a significant impact.
Matrose, who spent the previous season on loan back at Chippa United, believes he has the potential to surpass the performance levels he exhibited at his former club.
Despite the competition for a spot in the Pirates lineup, he remains confident in his abilities and envisions becoming a key player for the Soweto giants.
“I can [return to that form] and I can be more than I was at Chippa… Here, there are a lot of big players, a lot of experienced players.”
“So, from being here, it’s a lot of achievement.” said Matrose
Azola Matrose’s challenges
Azola Matrose’s journey with Orlando Pirates has presented its own set of challenges.
The club boasts a multitude of attacking options, making the competition for a spot in the starting XI intense.
Despite this, Matrose remains undeterred, recognizing the valuable learning experience and competition that comes with being part of such a dynamic squad.
“It doesn’t discourage me and instead it builds me up because I also need game-time… “
“As I’m here I’m not demotivated, I’m motivated because I’m playing with players who are willing to play, and I need this game-time so I can compete in the first team.” said Azola Matrose
Matrose, along with Relebohile Mofokeng, recently featured in Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) side, under the guidance of coach Joseph Makhanya.
The team showcased their prowess with a commanding 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
Makhanya noted that including these players in the DDC team was a strategic move to ensure they are match-fit when the league resumes after the Africa Cup of Nations.
“I brought them into the DDC team so they can be ready by the time Jose Riveiro’s side resumes the league next month after the Africa Cup of Nations.” said Coach Joseph Makhanya
