55-year-old foreigner arrested for police bribery

A 55-year-old man who is a foreign national, was caught trying to bribe the police on Friday, January 19, 2024. The police were busy with Operation Shanela, and while doing their job, they ended up arresting three people who did not have proper documents.

This 55-year-old man showed up at the police station and tried to bribe the officers so they would let go of the undocumented individuals.

The officers documented the bribery attempt and promptly arrested the man. They opened a case for bribery, and the 55-year-old man was taken into police custody.

Major-General Arthur Peter Adams, the District Commissioner of Mangaung Metro, praised the police for sticking to the rules and ethics of the South African Police Service.

He commended Sergeant Thato Elijah Rammile and his team at Kagisanong Police Station for their exemplary integrity.

The suspect and the undocumented individuals who were arrested will have their court appearance at Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Monday, January 22, 2022.

In a seperate incidentJean Pierre Van Niekerk, 25, faced the Kimberley Serious Commercial Crime Court for the second time.

He was initially brought to court on Thursday, December 21, 2023, following his arrest by Hawks Serious Commercial Crime members on charges of fraud.

During the period from July 2022 to March 2023, Van Niekerk, employed as the Financial Manager at the Northern Cape Cricket Union, allegedly diverted funds meant for service providers into his personal bank account. The entity suffered an actual loss exceeding R400,000.

The case has been postponed to Thursday, February 1, 2024 and the accused is out on bail.
