20-year-old Katlego Mphuthi killed by mob justice

One of the seven young men who were killed in Diepsloot from a suspected vigilante attack did not deserve to die in such a horrible way. This is according to Katlego Mphuthi’s family.

In two seperate incidents on Friday night, a mob justice in the Johannesburg north settlement reportedly caught and killed seven suspected criminals.

Five victims of the attack were found pilled up in Extension 12, and two more bodies were recovered in Extension 13.

The only person who had not been completely burned beyond recognition was twenty-year-old Katlego Mphuthi. This allowed his relatives to recognise his body.

According to his family, Mphuthi loved playing football after school and grew up in Extension 12. As Mphuthi went into high school, things with his behaviour started to take a wrong turn.

According to EWN he was expelled in grade eight, befriended the wrong crowd, and became a petty thief.

His grandmother, Esther Radebe said Mphuthi still had a lot of time to turn his life around.

“Even the other four children who were also torched and killed, it’s wrong because they were not caught stealing anything. The community needs to be aware and not act on rumours.”

Police in Diepsloot are currently investigating seven murders.
